Specialist Tuition for GCSE and A-Level

  • We offer specialist support to dyslexic students studying for GCSE and A level examinations. This can be in individual or group sessions.
    Support for GCSE English Language for Year 10 (AQA 1-9 – new 2014 specification) 
     

    Session 1 – Reading Section – Paper 1 Questions 1 and 2 (Fact finding and the effects of language features)

    Session 2 – Reading Section – Paper 1 Questions 3 and 4 (Use of structure and personal judgement to text)

    Session 3 – Reading Section – Paper 2 Questions 3 and 4 (Writer’s use of language and comparing attitudes and perspectives)

    Session 4 – Writing Section – Paper 1 Question 5 (Creative writing)

    Session 5 – Writing Section – Paper 2 Question 5 (Non-fiction writing)

    Session 6 – Consolidation session

    This course runs once a week for 6 weeks on Thursdays from 5.30-7.30 p.m, twice during the course of the year. The total cost for the course is £210. Places are assigned on a first come- first served basis.

    The content of the course can vary depending on the needs of the students in the group.

    Please note that the number of students in the group is limited to a maximum of 6.

     

    Support for GCSE English Language for Year 11 (AQA Higher Tier – outgoing spec.)

    Session 1 – Reading Section – Question 4 (Language features and effects) and Question 1 (What do you understand about..?)

    Session 2 – Reading Section – Question 4 (Language features and effects) and Question 2 (Effectiveness of headline and picture and links to the text)

    Session 3 – Reading Section – Question 4 (Language features and effects) and Question 3 (Explore the thoughts and feelings of …)

    Session 4 – Writing Section – Question 5 (Writing to describe and explain)

    Session 5 – Writing Section – Question 6 (Writing to persuade)

    Session 6 – Pulling it all together!

    This course runs once a week for 6 weeks on Tuesdays from 5.30-7.30 p.m. The total cost for course is £210 twice during the academic year. Places are assigned on a first come- first served basis.

    Revision and exam technique for GCSE and A-level 

    Topics that are often covered include:

    Revision

    • Forgetting Curve – short term memory difficulties

    • Importance of review
    • Revision techniques (at least 10 different approaches including using technology)

    Planning

    • Setting priorities
    • Organising your time for revision

    Examinations

    • Question the question and different types of instruction words/key verbs
    • Learning from past papers
    • Learning new vocabulary
    • Skim reading and reverse skim reading 
    • Planning grids
    • Function of an exam and the examiner
    • Just before the exam
    • Dealing with stress/symptoms of stress/dealing with stress
    • Using extra time in exams
